Letter: Politicians stand in way of democracy

I agree with Newsday’s editorial “Fix voter laws to ensure rights” [April 21]. The politicians make it extremely difficult for the general population to vote, and this is to ensure that the vote count is low. A low vote count makes it easier for incumbents to remain in power.
It is extremely difficult for new candidates to even get on the ballot.
I believe that many very qualified people who would like to serve their country do not even try because of the obstacles put in their way. We supposedly are a country of free elections, but not really.
