A huge round of applause is due to columnist Daniel Akst for his sensible proposals to not only save the Postal Service, but to provide an easy way for customers to build their savings ["Let's bank on -- and save -- the Postal Service," Opinion, April 30].

Akst says that many nations already have a postal banking system. Why not the United States, supposedly the leader of the free world?

Akst's plan has, in addition, a beneficial side effect: It would encourage letter-writing, an art that should not be superseded by cold-blooded electronic communications.
