Letter: Prevent penalties for cancellations

I have worked as a school nurse on Long Island for more than 20 years. I love my job and the children. I truly understand the need to have days made up due to the "Frankenstorm," so when districts work snow days into their schedules, we employees know we must not book vacations or time off, in case the schools need to stay open ["Students need full school year," Editorial, Nov. 20].
Many of us face substantial penalties from airlines, cruise ships and vacation organizers if the February break is canceled. The Northeast has suffered enough loss and disappointment without having to endure more financial pain.
We are dedicated employees who need a break from the airlines, etc., not penalties for being loyal to our professions. Surely this situation could be addressed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, President Barack Obama or individual district superintendents.
