At nearly 70 years of age, I attended my first political rally on Feb. 24. A diverse group of about 100 gathered in front of Rep. Peter King’s office in Massapequa Park in support of immigration [“Protesting King on immigration,” News, Feb. 25].

While we listened to speakers with hopeful messages, more than a dozen men across the street shouted anti-immigrant, pro-Donald Trump slogans. Many passing drivers honked and yelled ugly epithets at us.

Because I had been warned about the likelihoood of such protesters, I thought I would feel threatened and angry. But all I felt was pity that these Americans believed it was a productive use of their time to spread vitriol and interrupt those of us preaching a philosophy of love and inclusion. Sad!
