Letter: Queen's gala is over the top
We fought a war of independence to get out from under the rule of a monarch; 36 years later, that same monarch tried to once again put us under his rule.
The British people finally were able to institute a democratic system of government, learning from the United States, and making the monarchy and all of its trappings and pomposity strictly symbolic.
So why must I and tens of millions of Americans be subject to this constant media onslaught of royal family goings-on ["Show fit for queen," News, June 5]? Weddings, divorces, anniversaries on and on, ad nauseam?
