Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) claims he is an avid follower of the conservative individualistic philosophy of writer Ayn Rand ["Does Paul Ryan see the limits of Ayn Rand?" Opinion, Aug. 14]. He also lists Roman Catholicism as his religion. In my view, the two are mutually exclusive.

Rand's writings are clear in that only those who help themselves are considered worthy. Catholicism, on the other hand, says when we feed, clothe or shelter the defenseless, we are doing these things to God himself.

Which is Ryan? A Roman Catholic or a Rand conservative?
