Letter: Recycling incentive still needed

The letter arguing to repeal New York’s bottle deposit law says the law is unnecessary because of weekly recyclable pickups, and because the public is well aware of the consequences of filling landfills [“Repeal New York’s bottle-can deposit law,” Just Sayin’, Aug. 13].
The letter writer then complained about scavengers collecting recyclables. I see that, and a lot of it is beer and soda containers that people don’t bother to return. I also see, on recycling day, that many houses never have any cans out. How is this possible, especially with the public being so well aware of the consequences?
Unfortunately, the economic incentive is still needed for many people. This law needs to stay.
