Letter: Religion not needed to teach children well

Regarding “Religion does more good than harm” [Letters, Jan. 3], I find it sad and disheartening that otherwise reasonably intelligent people feel they need religion to teach them what common sense should.
Parents should teach their children compassion, right from wrong, and to treat people as they wish to be treated. Instead, they brainwash their kids from infancy to believe in a mystical, invisible being in the sky, and all the outrageous stories that go with it that are scientifically, biologically and physiologically impossible.
Religion tries to put fear of God into people to control their behavior.
