With all due respect, I take issue with Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello's recent letter ["Nassau GOP won big in elections," Nov. 8].

First, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray lost the race for district attorney for two simple reasons: She was not qualified for the job, and voters saw the conflict of interest Murray would have investigating and prosecuting our ethically challenged local politicians.

The reason Republicans almost always win these local elections is because of poor voter turnout. The Republican machine excels at getting their people out to vote, because many of them have a personal stake in Republicans staying in office.

Finally, does Mondello really believe that these Republican legislators, particularly in Nassau County and the Town of Oyster Bay, are good stewards of the public funds with which they are entrusted? He only needs to read Newsday to see the scandals, patronage, pay-to-play, and cronyism that exist in local government.
