Letter: Require therapy for animal abusers

I am mystified how our legal system has not grasped the seriousness of animal abuse [“2 plead guilty to animal cruelty,” News, March 16].
The story stated that a puppy had a leg and ears cut off in “botched amputations.” This is deviant and abnormal behavior. There is something wrong with people who brutalize animals. To not have them realize any empathy toward animals is a golden clue that tells you they probably don’t care about humans, either.
To put these people back on the street without extensive psychological therapy is a mistake. Just because the abuse took place on an animal rather than a person, it should not be overlooked how irrational the abusers’ decision was. I cringe knowing that some very disturbed people are walking the streets.
They should be barred for life from adopting another pet.
