After reading Newsday’s update about the 2013 slaying of Saundra Simonée [“Daughter’s beau on trial in mom’s killing,” News, March 1], I felt it was imperative to also note that there was more to this person than the violence committed against her.

She was an extraordinary teacher who taught for several decades at the Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Center. She was an elegant, refined individual who positively influenced hundreds of young adults as they pursued careers in cosmetology.

At graduation ceremonies at the Tilles Center, Simonée graced us with her lovely voice as she sang our national anthem. The educational system lost an invaluable, devoted and gifted teacher.
