Letter: Science changes as knowledge grows

A letter writer accused atheists of turning science into a religion [“Science, religion and the search for truth,” Sept. 16]. He’s a science museum docent who describes himself as a practicing Anglican, but he displays a surprising disregard for the true nature of science. Unlike religion, science is not a set of beliefs that depend on faith; science is a system for inquiry that demands objective evidence.
No matter how much confidence one places in the ability of science to ultimately answer the most fundamental questions, one cannot make science into a religion. As soon as the evidence begins to point toward different conclusions, science revises its views. This is something religion doesn’t easily do.
