I am tired of the public bashing the Suffolk County Police Department and its commissioner ["Double-dipping at SCPD is offensive," Letters, Oct. 17]. The commissioner earned the pay he will be collecting upon his retirement. Instead of taking vacations or calling in sick, he chose to work.

When residents are all nice and tucked into their beds on winter nights, when the temperature is 5 degrees and the wind is howling, these men and women of the police department will be out there protecting them. Remember that the next time you need to call on them at 2 a.m.

Sure they are paid well, but I am almost sure you would not like to be out there on those winter nights. I know I would not. I also know that I will be home on time for dinner with my family every night, unlike some of these officers, who do not make it home to dinner or not at all.
