Letter: Sheriff's deputy blinded by sun?

Relatives said that, moments after his car came to a stop on the Long Island Expressway, William Schettino called his mother to say he'd had an accident. Soon after, Schettino was killed when a Suffolk County sheriff's office patrol car struck him. (March 14, 2012) Credit: Robert Garafalo
I have reached an age where nothing should surprise me, and yet I find myself amazed at "A final call to his mom" [News, March 16].
A Suffolk County sheriff's deputy hit and killed an 18-year-old man, who was standing by his car that was stuck in the westbound HOV lane in Ronkonkoma. The police officer's story was that the sun was in his eyes, and he didn't see the victim.
This is a crazy explanation. Anybody with any sense would drive slowly if the sun were in his eyes. No doubt, he will not be charged with a crime. Would such an explanation work for you or me?
