Letter: ShotSpotter must prove its value

Your editorial suggesting that Suffolk County should give ShotSpotter more time mentions that there is one legislator, that would be me, who wishes to pull the plug ["Suffolk's ShotSpotter might still hit the mark," July 18].
If ShotSpotter needs time to tweak the system and work out the bugs, that's fine, but not with taxpayers' money. The maker should refund the $800,000 Suffolk has already paid for a system that so far has been an absolute failure.
The taxpayers should not pay another dime until ShotSpotter can prove its value. That would be the responsible thing to do.
