Letter: Shouldn’t Oscars be color blind?

I’m confused by the furor over the failure of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to nominate any minorities for Oscars in acting categories [“Promising changes,” News, Jan. 20].
Isn’t such a selection supposed to be color blind?
Spike Lee said there should be some kind of “quota” system to ensure that films by and about minority individuals get made. Wouldn’t that be a giant step backward for our country?
Our selection processes — in sports and entertainment, as well as in the business and academic worlds — should be color blind. The only way to destroy racism is to have people judged only by their ability.
