Many drownings are in the news ["Tot drowns in pool," News, July 5]. I'm surprised that the simple survival skill of floating, which can be learned in 10 to 20 minutes, is rarely if ever taught. It can work for everyone, from about age 2.

In shallow water, with an instructor or friend at your side, lay your head back into the water, keeping your mouth out. Your body can be curved into a letter C. Take deep breaths and hold them.

Most people will float in this position and can shout or hand paddle slowly. This is a potential lifesaver!
