Letter: Students need February break

It is shameful that the Plainview-Old Bethpage school district canceled the ubiquitous February winter vacation [“No winter break for one district,” News, Feb. 17].
Unlike most local districts, Plainview-Old Bethpage started school on Sept. 9. It could have asked teachers to waive their contract provision that requires school to start after Labor Day.
As a school parent, I believe students and teachers need a breather between December and April breaks. It also marks the change in semesters and marking periods.
