Newsday should have printed its two articles on Suffolk County finances side-by-side to highlight the incongruity of Suffolk's budgeting.
"Suffolk deficit looms" [News, Aug. 26] on page A5 focuses on County Executive Steve Bellone's "tough choices ahead." But anyone reading "Downtown grants planned" [News, Aug. 26] on page A22 would have to snicker at the irony of Bellone's proposing $48,000 for decorative crosswalks with a warning surface, curb extensions and decorative streetlights, as well as $37,000 for an illuminated crosswalk.
