Letter: SUNY's hardly a 'bargain'

The Census Bureau released data that show those with a bachelor's degree and other advanced degrees earned more than those with less education and had lower rates of unemployment during the recent recession. (June 2009) Credit: Frank Koester
I agree with columnist Daniel Akst that SUNY schools offer exceptional programs, and that they provide students with a high quality of education ["Lessons in quality, and marketing, at Geneseo," Opinion, Feb 20].
However, the typical SUNY annual tuition, room and board of $21,000, while certainly much lower than private college tuition, is hardly a "bargain" for many working families living on Long Island. After additional expenses such as travel, supplies, etc., earning a bachelor's degree at a SUNY school could cost $100,000.
High-quality education? Absolutely. A bargain? Let's be real.
