Letter: Surrogacy is sometimes trafficking

I believe that commercial surrogacy is a rapidly increasing problem in the United States [“The perils of commercial surrogacy,” Opinion, Dec. 7]. Money is a powerful motive, and many women are giving their bodies to carry someone else’s child or children.
These women are being exploited and, as this piece describes, are put in harmful situations. Some surrogate mothers are asked to abort healthy babies.
The fact that some countries refer to this as human trafficking, and the United States doesn’t, is extremely scary. The only time that surrogacy should be allowed is when a couple is unable to have children, and the whole process should be monitored.
