It’s disgraceful that Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and proponents of the third-track project are using the recent train derailment east of New Hyde Park Station to promote their unnecessary and wasteful project [“Rail crash stirs debate,” News, Oct. 12].

They should be spending their time and energy — and our money — on improving the existing tracks and upgrading safety equipment.

Another track from Floral Park to Hicksville would just increase the number of passenger and freight trains speeding past homes, playgrounds and businesses.

For safety, let’s eliminate the grade crossings and forget the unneeded third track.
