July 4, 2011--Actor Jim Foote re-enacts President Theodore Roosevelt giving a 4th of July speech from the front lawn of Sagamore Hill, known in the early 1900's as the Summer White House, before a huge crowd of gatherers in Oyster Bay Monday July 4, 2011. Also featured at the site was an equestrian demonstration by the Rough Rider Cavalry Troop of the Nassau-Suffolk Horsemens Association, on riding techniques used by mounted soldiers of the Spanish-American War at an authentic cavalry training camp. Regarding "An unauthorized message" [Letters, Oct. 4], if anyone is interested in getting a more accurate appraisal of Theodore Roosevelt's character, then I would strongly suggest that they read "The Imperial Cruise" by James Bradley.

This carefully researched and well-documented book reveals that Roosevelt was among other things, a racist. He was also a warmonger; until of course, his own son died in World War I.
