While reading "Company in crash had 23 violations" [News, Dec. 22], my blood pressure hit an all-time high. It seems that Jewell Transportation Inc., the company that owns the tractor-trailer involved in the fatal 35-car crash on the Long Island Expressway, had been cited for at least 23 driving violations in the past two years.

Some of the infractions were speeding, tailgating, failure to obey traffic-control laws and failure to use hazard flashers. I want to know why the U.S. Department of Transportation department or the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration have not closed down this company. Are officials waiting for more fatalities?
