I want to add my voice to the conversation regarding leaving Afghanistan. I fully agree with former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato ["D'Amato: Withdraw troops," Letters, Sept. 2].

We need to pull our troops out immediately. Every day our servicemen and women are dying or being seriously injured in this senseless war that is truly impossible to win.

Our purpose going into this war seemed clear: Seek out and punish those who attacked us on Sept. 11, 2001. I see no reason to debate whether we have accomplished this objective. However, it's clear to me that keeping our men and women there through the end of next year will not have any measurable effect.

It is clearly time to bring the troops home and honor them for their service.
