Thank you for the article "Doggone" [News, Aug. 9] and for highlighting the difficulties of obtaining a dog run in Tully Park for residents of and near New Hyde Park.

Dogs need room to exercise. Happy dogs bark less. Homes in New Hyde Park are situated on smaller lots, resulting in smaller backyards for dogs to run and play.

The resolution to accept a grant of $5,258 to fund a small dog park at Tully was passed more than two years ago. A year of inaction was followed by constant inquiries to various officials by myself and others and failed promises of transparency. Finally, the town hired a consultant to study the dog run. It took Newsday's efforts for this report to be released to the public, and the results were soft conclusions.

This study suggested that the land being considered at Tully, because it is less than an acre, was too small for a successful dog run.

New York City is host to many successful facilities that are less than an acre. Are we going to let the southern portion of North Hempstead, with the highest density of dogs per capita, become another victim of politics as usual? Or will the constituents of New Hyde Park obtain what is required for their best friends?
