Letter: U.S. needs better training for skilled jobs

Presidential candidates talk about bringing back manufacturing jobs, but absurdly missing is serious questioning of whether our workforce is qualified or competent enough to achieve this [“Bill: Hillary is the ‘one you want,’ ” News, May 28].
There are successful youth training programs in Germany, Austria and other industrial countries. According to the recently published book “Reskilling America,” by Katherine S. Newman and Hella Winston, thousands of jobs remain unfilled because of a lack of talent and preparation.
To her credit, Hillary Clinton proposed a plan to increase vocational training by offering companies a $1,500 tax credit for every apprentice they hire and train. We need to hear many more ideas and plans from the remaining candidates before November about creating an industrial renaissance if we are to compete globally.
