There are so many people looking for work but businesses often cannot find skilled trades workers to fill the vacancies ["No hiring freeze here," Business, March 5]. This is an indictment of our society and our school system.

It is time that we return to the basics and acknowledge that everyone does not want to go to college. We will always need skilled tradesmen, honorable jobs that can provide middle-class incomes.

It is time for our high schools to refocus on vocational programs, providing students with marketable skills and our workforce with qualified employees.
