The letter "Private schools save public money" [Sept. 11] brought me back over 35 years, when we sent our child to private school, knowing we'd have to pay tuition in addition to school property taxes. All we received for those taxes was the use of textbooks for the year and bus service.

We begged for vouchers for use at our school of choice, to no avail. Private schools operate on much lower budgets and a lot of parental support. Sadly, many private schools have been forced to close -- and where do the students now go? To public school of course!

If those genuises in Albany had thought ahead, they might have given the voucher program a try.
