In your Jan. 4 news story on Ward Melville, “Stony Brook: Homage to a visionary,” former Suffolk County planner Lee Koppelman is quoted as describing Melville as a “complex individual.”

Given that the article also states that Melville established covenants that barred Jews from his Stony Brook Village Center, the correct term for Melville is anti-Semitic. There’s nothing complex about Melville: He was an individual who institutionalized hate.
