Regarding "Special ed bill deserves veto" [Editorial, July 10], special education taxpayer funds should never be given to a religious institution because of "home environment and family background needs" without state Education Department oversight.

Religious institutions are ultimately responsible to their own leadership. This means they would not always be responsible to the individual family.

Imagine the shock to a special needs student when the religious institution cannot meet their needs and arbitrarily sends them into a different academic environment. Special needs children need the protection and consistency that every public schoolchild is guaranteed.
