After reading in Sunday's Newsday that Dix Hills water was not fit to drink without boiling, I was quite disturbed that I had not been notified before reading the newspaper ["Boil-water advisory still in effect in Dix Hills," News].

In this day and age, with the technology available, and the obvious existing threats to homeland security, it is quite unsettling to me that there is not a method in place to immediately inform residents of a problem.

I checked with a few of my neighbors, who also were not made aware of the water problem until it was a few days old. Something needs to be done to ensure that there is a way to inform residents of potential dangers as soon as they occur.

I find it astounding that in the 21st century the Dix Hills Water District has no public notification system to warn customers when there is a problem with the drinking water. One computer with an auto-dial program is all the district needs.

As a Dix Hills water customer, I was shocked when I read in the paper that I should have been boiling my water -- two days after the advisory was in effect! This is woefully inadequate when we're talking about the safety of drinking water.

The managers of the Dix Hills Water District should be handing in their resignations today, for they show a lack of foresight and regard for the safety of their water customers and frankly deserve no second chance.
