A U.S. Army sergeant after his fourth deployment in combat kills 16 civilians, and Afghan President Hamid Karzai calls it an assassination and is outraged ["Afghanistan, bad to worse," Editorial, March 13]. So is everyone else. Six U.S. soldiers were assassinated by Afghan security forces ["2 more killed at Bagram Air Base," News, March 6], and there has been too little condemnation by Karzai and others.

Ten years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan have strained our troops to the limit. Is anyone surprised that battle fatigue caused a GI to snap? A small number of troops are carrying the battle. There is no draft to relieve those tired troops. They all need a couple of years off. Time to bring everyone home. Let the Afghan people settle their own problems.
