Letter: Why are we the 'go to' military?

So once again, our nation's military has been called on to help in a another country, the Central African Republic ["U.S. to help send troops in," News, Dec. 10].
The request to transport troops from Burundi came from French and African Union peacekeepers. The peacekeepers there are apparently not doing a good job keeping the peace.
Are there no aircraft in France or in the countries of the African Union? Are we always the "go to" country?
Why must our military be in harm's way? In the end, no one truly appreciates our efforts.
