Letter: Why give raises to Hempstead board?

So the Hempstead Town Board is considering giving itself pay raises of $10,000 and $5,000 next year? ["Board proposes salary increases," News, Dec. 2]
Where exactly is this money coming from? All of Nassau is in debt; this doesn't exclude Hempstead. I definitely don't think that a salary raise for these people is needed.
Has the town board done anything so substantial the members deserve this kind of raise?
