Letters: Disturbed by 2016 presidential race

I’m 81, and I’ve never seen an election as bad as this one [“Who to blame for wretched election?,” Opinion, Aug. 17].
The candidates are like schoolchildren picking at each other. I’m not supporting either one. The candidate I was going to vote for is no longer in the race.
Running the greatest country in the world is not an easy job, and these two major-party candidates aren’t qualified.

Columnist Lane Filler hit the nail on the head with “Who to blame for wretched election?”
He wrote, “Clinton and Trump are just the mirrors. What they’re showing us and responding to is our hateful treatment of each other.”
Civility, respect for each other, and the process of electing a president have hit new lows.
With the use of social media, there appears to be a rise in abusive, selfish and self-centered behavior. Many feel they can express their opinions as openly and crassly as they would like, becoming cyberbullies.
The other problem is that Americans are being manipulated by the media. Depending on which media, right-wing or left-, we are being riled and scared into making rash decisions and demeaning those who don’t believe as we do.
We as Americans wanted reality TV, warts and all, and this is how we’re selecting a candidate for the highest and most important office in this country. We only have ourselves to blame.
