In an Aug. 30 letter, "Why do FEMA funds go to synagogues?," a reader states, "Religious institutions have their own money. Why must I pay for their security? What ever happened to separation of church and state?"

The answer is that there never was a complete separation. Churches, synagogues, mosques and temples are exempt from property taxes, protection is provided whenever a threat is made, traffic control is available on religious holidays, etc. -- all paid for with our taxes. Why are synagogues singled out?
