Good outweighs bad in changes by LIRR

Some Long Island Rail Road passengers may be inconvenienced by the schedule changes accompanying the new Grand Central Terminal connection ["Changes for LIRR B'klyn-bound riders," News, June 19]. However, the new plan for connections to Atlantic Terminal seems far superior to the current system. I don't have a single destination, but use the LIRR to connect to all parts of New York City, with a varying schedule. Connections to Brooklyn have always been tricky because of the current system. I frequently wait more than 10 minutes at Jamaica for a scheduled Atlantic Terminal connection and have had to switch tracks using the pedestrian walkway above the tracks. I often consider taking a subway from Brooklyn to Jamaica (and sometimes to Penn Station) because of the wait for trains from Brooklyn to Jamaica, and I have occasionally taken the subway to Penn during off-hours because waiting at Atlantic Terminal would have caused me to have a long wait at Jamaica. I am sure some people will be inconvenienced by the new Atlantic Terminal connection. However, the good outweighs the bad.

I'm working to pay my LIPA bills -- for this?

Isn't that so nice of our governor to give assistance to those who have not paid their bills ["Some LIPA bills to be forgiven," News, June 22]. However, the cost is being borne in part by other customers. I am one of those other customers -- a woman in her mid-70s who has to continue working to pay for luxuries such as heat in winter and an air conditioner in my bedroom in summer. Now, as a reward for working into my 70s and paying my bills, another surcharge likely will be added to my electric bill. The current surcharges on my bill add up to more than my usage. To add insult to injury, I keep getting emails from PSEG Long Island telling me it can help me lower my bills! I have already cut my electric usage to the minimum.
