Letter: Neighbors fault commercial zones

Lane Filler's column "Longing for a burger in the Land of No" [Opinion, April 23], about a Sonic rejected by the Town of Smithtown for Route 25 in Nesconset, was as one-sided as the article "Restaurant to replace old vacant garage" [News, April 11], which failed to quote opponents of a restaurant the town will allow on Route 25 in Commack.
The rationale for saying no to the Sonic may have something to do with the safety and well-being of the local residents, who are potentially the patrons who would keep Sonic in business. We must bear the burden of a heavy concentration of commercial and industrial zones.
I would like to have some of the commentators on the Burger Station proposal work and sleep through the noise of trucks, the beeping and the banging of loading and unloading cargo on heavy wooden pallets thrown against metal.
There is no reason why only some privileged areas should remain beautiful or tranquil; every community should be as respectful of residents as possible.
