No college aid for immigrants in the country illegally

I read the article “A push for immigrant college aid” [News, March 10], which reports on legislation calling for financial aid for immigrants in the country illegally to attend college. The proposal would allow them to qualify for state academic scholarships, student loans or the need-based Tuition Assistance Program.

I have issues with this concept. I have five grandchildren whose parents will struggle to pay for their college educations. My grandchildren will probably have to go deeply into debt with loans because they probably will not receive grants.

Call me selfish, but anyone who is in this country illegally should not be entitled to any benefits! This reminds me of a suggestion that prisoners be allowed to take college courses for free.

When this idea was raised in the 1980s, I had two teenagers who were college bound, but no one offered them a free education. Fortunately, that idea never came to pass.

And people wonder why Donald Trump resonates with the American public. It’s ideas like this.
