The World Health Organization will recognize World No Tobacco Day on Saturday. The tobacco and nicotine industry continues to market harmful products that affect Long Island communities. Flavored tobacco products may include menthol cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigarettes, and nicotine pouches. Over 80% of youth and young adults report using flavored tobacco.

The industry uses strategies to make their harmful products appealing and create a false sense of desirability. These products are highly addictive and designed to create a cycle of dependence and sustained use. The additives in tobacco products mask the harshness of use, making it easier to start and harder to quit.

As a doctor of nursing practice, I know that removing the appeal of these products through stricter regulations is essential. Helping to reduce the number of people who use tobacco will lower health care costs, decrease tobacco-related illness, and save lives.
