Northport High School students had planned a 15-minute walkout earlier this month to protest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement policies. They did not leave the property and were upfront with the administration about what they were going to do.

When I was a student at Northport High, we protested the Vietnam War. People we knew had already died in Vietnam. We also had sit-ins to protest a problem, as we saw it then, of a new rule — “no public display of affection.” It’s what kids do!

Americans need to pay attention to U.S. and world events. Whether you like it or not, that is an important part of education. Education comes, not just from teachers, but from your own experiences.

The Northport students objected to ICE rounding up students, parents and small children without following the Constitution or the law. Many targets have been U.S. citizens. There was no probable cause, no warrants, no due process; just scooping people up and “disappearing” them.

Our country was built on protests, many not as peaceful as the one at Northport High School. I am proud of these students. Congratulations to them and to the school and district for keeping them safe.
