Pharmacies should wait for patient permission

It’s really great that doctors are doing away with paper prescriptions, but I do find one problem with the plan [“Rx directions: Goodbye!” News, Feb. 28].
A number of times, my doctor has sent my yearly prescription to the pharmacy. The pharmacy has filled the prescription right away in its entirety, and has called to say I owe them $300 or $400.
Pharmacies should be told not to fill the prescriptions until the patient calls for them. Some of the pharmacies don’t use any sense.
