Letter: Prayer out of place at town hall

I find the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court involving an opening prayer at town hall meetings very disturbing ["Prayer ruling strikes balance," Editorial, May 6].
Suppose I were scheduled to meet with the zoning committee to ask for a variance to improve my home. Say that a prayer starts the meeting, and the person delivering the prayer is not of my faith, or maybe I have no religious faith.
I see that all the zoning board members have lowered their heads in prayer. Should I lower mine? If I don't, will it affect my petition for a variance?
More than likely, my petition will be heard on its merits, but I should never even have to worry about it.
