Stand behind the president now

Democrats claim President Donald Trump’s war in Iran is illegal since it was not approved by Congress “Readers react to attack on Iran,” Letters, March 4]. I remind my Democratic friends that the last time Congress issued a declaration of war was in 1941. There have been many wars since then started by presidents of both parties.

I think it’s time for all Americans to stand behind Trump’s action because I believe the vast majority of Americans know Iran’s government has acted in evil ways and wants to wipe out the United States and Israel, as Iran has stated many times over.

Of the letters published about the Iran conflict, almost all criticized Donald Trump. When then-President Barack Obama bombed Libya in 2011, was the seven-month conflict different from this one?

Gas prices jumping quickly isn’t right

I am amazed that when the price of oil goes up, retailers are allowed to pass on wholesale price increases almost immediately [“Gas prices on LI jump 10 cents overnight,” News, March 5].

The fuel already in their tanks was purchased at a lower price, and any increases should occur once the next delivery is made.

The entire process, from transporting crude oil, refining it, and delivering the finished gasoline to a local station takes two weeks to one month. Only then should the price of gas be raised.

The oil companies have been gouging their customers for decades this way. It’s just not right and not fair.

Clearing hydrants shouldn’t be a game

It’s a sad day when we need a contest to incentivize digging out fire hydrants for firefighters [“New challenge: hydrant heroes,” News, Feb. 26]. While it might be fun for kids to send in pictures to win prizes, how about adults emphasizing the importance of the hydrants being cleared to win the grand prize — your life.
