Be fair to those opposing Pride displays

Based on the headline on Randi Marshall’s column, I assumed she was going to highlight the failure of unenforced red flag laws that factored into the suspected shooter having access to weapons at Club Q in Colorado Springs, Colorado ["Colorado shootings another red flag," Opinion, Nov. 22]. Unfortunately, her piece accused those on the right of causing the violence. First, I fail to see how the quotes she cites from Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert as suggesting that people should commit acts of violence. The dots do not connect.

Second, Marshall also claims that there is a “heinous narrative that falsely accuses the LGBTQ+ community of recruiting children.” By the end of the article, she is upset that people could oppose Pride Progress flags in classrooms and Pride displays at children’s sections of libraries. How can there simultaneously be no “recruiting” of children and Pride items that are clearly on display to children?

Is it too much to ask that news outlets such as Newsday do not print opinions that unfairly demonize a group of people who oppose exposing children to Pride displays without evidence that their words or actions were directly responsible for violence?

Town unfairly picks roads to repave

A reader wrote about broken promises by the Town of Brookhaven regarding road repaving in her neighborhood ["Broken promises on road to pothole fixes," Letters, Nov. 21]. My issue with the town of Brookhaven has to do with a recent repaving in Centereach. Almost all the roads off Hammond Road were recently repaved, including several cul-de-sacs that barely had a crack in the road. These newer blocks were scraped and had new pavement laid. If my tax money is going to be wasted, I’d appreciate it if my street, which is six years older than the ones recently replaced, would be repaved, too.
