Musings: This is such a taxing situation
Homes in Mineola. Something must be done to equalize property taxes on Long Island, a reader writes. Credit: Newsday/John Keating
Maybe I woke up grumpy the other morning, but I was angry after I read about a two-family home with six bedrooms, four full bathrooms and two half-baths on a 0.75-acre lot on the North Fork that listed for $2.27 million. The property taxes? It said $13,137.
Yes, I’m aware that the cost of school districts is the biggest factor in determining local taxes, but I feel this still is not fair — I pay approximately the same taxes for my four-bedroom home in Smithtown.
My house is nice, but it wouldn’t sell for close to that sum. Something must be done to equalize taxes on Long Island.
