As we gather around the candles, tree and table this season, most of us will rejoice in the comfort of family and friends, the warmth of a home closed tight against Long Island's winter chill and the bounty of delicious meals and presents.
But some of us won't.
To help the less fortunate, for the past 60 years the Newsday Charities Help-A-Family campaign has provided needy Long Islanders with a vast array of aid, in a way that allows donors to leverage their help tremendously. Because donations are matched 50 cents on every dollar by the McCormick Foundation and because that foundation and Newsday pay for all administrative costs associated with the drive, every dollar donated results in $1.50 dedicated to better the lives of the less fortunate.
Last year 41 nonprofit agencies received grants totaling $1.2 million. Over the last 10 years nearly $8 million has been deployed by Newsday Charities in the community. Needs addressed are diverse and include hunger, housing, shelter, clothing, job training, literacy and a host of other services.
Donations are coming in a bit slowly this year, as they are for most charities, but there is still time to give.
