If the blighted area near the busy Ronkonkoma train station can become a model transit-oriented development, that would lead the way for this much-needed form of revitalization across Long Island.

Happily, there really are developers interested in helping the Town of Brookhaven accomplish something big in the Ronkonkoma hub: to turn it into a real downtown, with shops, restaurants and housing that will keep young people here and attract more.

The town had sought a master developer to bring the area around the station to its full potential. Now four have come forward. Three are based on the Island, and one is national in scope.

Next, the town will tap their ideas in creating a request for formal proposals. A final plan is still months away, but this level of interest is an important step toward more walkable, livable downtowns. hN
