The argument that State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher consistently makes for the state to support SUNY is that it can be -- and in many ways already is -- a powerful engine of economic development. This Wednesday in Albany, SUNY will roll out a comprehensive report on the economic impact of the 64-campus system -- both on campus and in the community beyond. The report's researchers come from the Rockefeller Institute of Government, associated with the University at Albany, and the University at Buffalo Regional Institute. It will examine what SUNY adds to the economy of the state's 10 regions, identify the system's potential for spurring more economic growth and create benchmarks for the future. At a time when so many new jobs are needed, harnessing SUNY's job-creation power is crucial.
